Halloween Costumes and Toys: Five Safety Checks

Children's costumes can catch fire quickly, so check the label, keep them away from flames, and make sure the costume has not been recalled.

Halloween is on Saturday. Costumes are great fun, but many are made of light, flowing materials that can catch fire quickly. The government's product safety office and fire services recommend a few simple checks.

Five Checks Before Saturday

  1. Read the label. Children's costumes are classed as toys and should carry a UKCA or CE mark, with safety information and the maker's or importer's details.
  2. Check it has not been recalled. Search the government's product recall list.
  3. Look for long cords or drawstrings, which can be a strangulation risk for young children.
  4. Keep costumes away from flames. Use battery lights in pumpkins and lanterns instead of candles.
  5. Teach "stop, drop and roll" in case clothing catches fire.

Buying Online

Take extra care with costumes from online marketplaces and sellers you do not know. If the listing gives no maker's name, no safety marking or no address, think twice.

If Something Is Unsafe

  • Stop using it and keep the receipt or order details.
  • Report it to the seller and to Citizens Advice (England and Wales), Consumer Advice Scotland, or Consumerline (Northern Ireland).
  • If it was faulty, you have rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, including the 30-day right to reject.
If clothing catches fire: stop, drop and roll, and smother the flames with a heavy coat or blanket. Cool any burn with plenty of water and get urgent medical help.
